Deputy Laboratory Director for Research

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is searching for a Deputy Laboratory Director for Research. As the Chief Research Officer at one of the world’s leading research institutions, the Deputy Laboratory Director (DLD) for Research develops, implements, and stewards Berkeley Lab’s research enterprise and directs its technology transfer program consistent with the Laboratory Director’s vision and Department of Energy (DOE) mission objectives. An ideal candidate for this position will possess an enthusiasm for DOE national laboratories and the critical roles they play among industry, academia, research institutions and other science agencies within the nation’s innovation ecosystem.

The DLD for Research drives excellence in scientific programs and ensures that Berkeley Lab is well positioned to create and capture new research opportunities while maintaining the highest standards of scientific output and research integrity. In particular, the DLD for Research: oversees the Lab’s Research Integrity and Conflicts of Interest functions; directs the Research Management Office, which ensures the health and productive direction of research programs and researchers across the Lab; and serves as the Lab’s chief research liaison with key stakeholders, primarily the DOE Office of Science and the University of California.

The DLD for Research also manages a robust Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) program with the goal of seeding the next generation of high-risk, high impact scientific inquiries. LDRD, awarded at the Laboratory Director’s discretion, has seeded research at Berkeley Lab that has led to at least three Nobel Prizes, including the discovery of dark energy and the recent Nobel awarded to the inventor of CRISPR technology. The program plays a critical role in nurturing emerging, often high risk/high potential payoff research programs.

Facilitating the efficient and timely movement of Berkeley Lab-developed technologies to market is another key responsibility of this position. The DLD for Research directs an integrated strategy for management and oversight of the Lab’s Intellectual Property Office and the Strategic Partnerships Office, the two offices with the greatest interface with industry and with creating economic activity. Ensuring that the Lab’s research enterprise and technology transfer programs work in harmony to create maximum impact to society is an ongoing objective of the position. Today, Berkeley Lab has partnered with hundreds of companies in moving technology out the door and was recently awarded seven R&D 100 Awards.

Workforce development plays an important role in the life of the Laboratory, and the DLD for Research has important responsibilities for attracting and retaining the best and brightest to the Lab and for ensuring a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment. Through the position’s oversight of the Lab’s Career Pathways Office, fellowship programs, and many levers of the researcher recruitment process, the DLD for Research fundamentally shapes the Lab’s workforce of today and tomorrow. Berkeley Lab has distinguished itself as an ideal place for early career scientists, with 42 DOE Early Career Research Program award winners since the program’s inception in 2010.

When it was founded nearly 90 years ago in 1931, Berkeley Lab ushered in a new way of doing science based on building large teams of researchers from different fields, along with engineers, mathematicians, machinists, and accountants, to tackle significant scientific challenges together. This approach has led to Berkeley Lab researchers winning 14 Nobel Prizes and a research portfolio that includes significant and often world-leading programs in physics, chemistry, materials sciences, advanced computing, scientific networking, biosciences, energy and energy technologies, and environmental sciences. “Team Science” remains an integral part of Berkeley Lab’s DNA, and the DLD for Research has front-line responsibility for championing this core value at the center of our collaborative culture.

Berkeley Lab has a dynamic workforce of about 4,000 employees and an annual operating budget of approximately $1.1 billion. The University of California (UC) manages Berkeley Lab for DOE’s Office of Science. This position reports to the Laboratory Director.


With the Laboratory Director and DLD for Operations, envision and implement Berkeley Lab’s short-, mid-, and long-term research and technology development strategies.

Seek out and pursue new research opportunities that leverage collaborations across Berkeley Lab’s scientific disciplines, other national laboratories, academic institutions, and private sector entities.

Act as a senior spokesperson for the Lab and when needed as a stand-in for the Laboratory Director with high-level stakeholders within and outside the government, including with DOE, Congress, industry representatives, state and local officials, and foregin officials.

Work daily with the DLD for Operations to ensure seamless collaborations among scientific goals and objectives with operational imperatives, such as health and safety, space management, financial management, and human resources issues.

Serve as the Deciding Official for matters related to scientific misconduct; serve as Institutional Officer for matters related to human and animal regulatory requirements for the Lab; and manage the Lab’s conflict of interest management cases.

Represent the Laboratory and the Directorate on committees and boards that improve institutional management and development.

Ensure that the Laboratory meets its contractual obligations to the DOE through the Performance Evaluation and Measurement Plan (PEMP) goals and objectives process.


Ph.D. in relevant scientific discipline and minimum of 15 years of professional experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Widely recognized for successful leadership of large, complex institutions, in either academia, government, or the nonprofit sector, with demonstrated exemplary leadership skills and proven success in creating, leading, and managing a mission-oriented, R&D institution or similar complex organization.

Distinguished record of scientific achievement.

Knowledge of the DOE National Laboratories complex and DOE programs.

Demonstrated abilities as a skilled communicator with exceptional interpersonal, relationship building, and negotiation skills applied across a broad spectrum of constituents and stakeholders.

A proven track record for building and maintaining diverse and inclusive workforces.

Demonstrated ability to develop and articulate a scientific research vision and strategy.

This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

The Deputy Laboratory Director of Research position is a career position that is appointed by and serves at the discretion of the Laboratory Director, and this appointment is at will and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.

This position is subject to the financial disclosure requirements of the California Political Reform Act of 1974. The successful candidate for this position will be required to file financial interest statements upon assuming this position, annually while holding this position, and when leaving this position.
